LIBERTY, Ohio — E.J. Blott Elementary School and W.S. Guy Middle School have earned the prestigious 2026 Ohio Governor’s Science of Reading Champion award, recognizing their exceptional implementation of evidence-based, phonics-focused reading instruction.
The award, developed by Mike DeWine and the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce, honors schools that demonstrate strong adoption of research-backed literacy practices and measurable improvements in student reading outcomes.
In 2026, 109 schools across Ohio were named Science of Reading Champions for their success in using the science of reading—an approach emphasizing systematic phonics, vocabulary development, comprehension, and language skills—to raise literacy rates.
E.J. Blott Elementary and W.S. Guy Middle School were recognized for their dedication to structured literacy instruction, targeted interventions, and consistent use of methods proven to build strong reading foundations.
“Receiving this recognition is a testament to the dedication and expertise of our teachers and staff,” said Brian Knight. “Their commitment to evidence-based reading instruction ensures that every student at Liberty Schools has the tools to become a confident, lifelong reader.”
The Governor’s Science of Reading Champion designation celebrates schools that not only implement research-based reading strategies but also achieve significant student progress in literacy, reinforcing the critical role of foundational reading skills in lifelong learning.
This honor highlights Liberty Schools’ ongoing commitment to academic excellence and ensuring students are well-prepared for success in reading and across all subjects.
