Michael Summers has been the director of the Liberty Band program and music department chair since 1999. He directs all the instrumental ensembles from grades five through twelve including the marching and jazz ensembles. Prior to Liberty, Mr. Summers was the director of bands at Western Reserve Local Schools in Berlin Center for four years, and assistant director at Hubbard High School for six years. He earned his Bachelor's of Music Degree from Youngstown State University and his Masters of Arts degree from Nova Southeastern University.
Michael has been an active member of the Ohio Music Education Association for over twenty five years. He has been an active adjudicator for over fifteen years, and has hosted numerous large group and solo and ensemble events. He has served as the district 5 fall conference chairman/ co-chair for over twenty years. He is currently serving as president elect for district 5 of the OMEA.
In 2005, Mr. Summers was selected as the Wal-Mart Teacher of the Year for Trumbull County. In 2007, he was nominated as a Walt Disney Teacher of the Year candidate, in 2010 Mr. Summers was nominated and progressed to the quarter finals as a Grammy Teacher of the Year, he has also been included several times in Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers, Who’s Who in America, and in 2020 received the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award.
Mr. Summers is an active trumpet player, private teacher, and arranger having arranged several pieces of music for the Liberty “Golden Leopard” Marching Band and the LHS Jazz Ensemble. Several of his students have continued their music education at the collegiate level with some performing professionally with groups such as the United States Marine and Army Bands.
Mr. Summers coached travel soccer for the Hubbard Traveling Soccer club from 2010 to 2018. He also serves as multi-media specialist, web master, and plays trumpet and occasionally bass guitar in the Leap of Faith Praise Team at Good Hope Lutheran Church in Boardman Ohio of which he is a member and has served as a Lay Pastor, Men's Group Leader, and on the church council. Mr. Summers currently lives in Hubbard, Ohio with his wife Debra and their children Andrew and Leslie.
